The 12th chapter of Revelation is one full of excitement, hope and triumph. The plot of the seven year tribulation comes to a climax. Satan is officially cast out of heaven once and for all, and is left to live out the rest of his days upon the earth before he is finally thrown into hell. That period of time seems to be approximately, if not exactly, 3 1/2 years (see Revelation 12:14). During this time he intends to wreak havoc upon the woman, who symbolizes the nation of Israel, and he will further persecute the followers of Jesus Christ (see Revelation 12:17), who are the tribulation saints, not the church. It is also during this time that we know all of Israel will corporately recognize their true Messiah, Jesus Christ, and be saved (see Romans 11:26).
At this point, it seems that Satan’s self-deception of winning the war against God will be exposed for how delusional it really is. The author of pride will himself be humiliated though he will still refuse humility. His dreams of exalting himself above the throne of the Most High will be eradicated when he is cast down. His access to the throne room will be forever denied and he will know his time is short!
And while this event sparks the wrath of Satan on earth, it becomes the cause of great rejoicing in heaven! Never again will the devil be allowed to accuse the saints day and night with his venomous slander before God Almighty. His vocal chords will be ripped out; his accusations against the saints will drop into hell with him, and the condemnation with which he condemned God’s people will be measured out to him. Like an obnoxious noise that is finally quieted, we will all rejoice to experience peace from his loathsome speech.
The devil’s day of reckoning is coming soon, church!
Indeed, it is already as good as done because Christ is ascended on high! You have nothing to fear of an enemy who is already defeated by the cross and whose future is already destined for destruction by the resurrected King. And though, to this day, Satan prowls about like a roaring lion (see 1 Peter 5:8), it’s a show of force with no real teeth. Though Satan asks to sift us like wheat, his attacks cannot overcome Christ’s intercession (see Luke 22:31-32). Though Satan has fiery darts to discourage and dissuade us from truth, his darts cannot penetrate the shield of our faith in Christ! (see Ephesians 6:16)
Therefore, Beloved, walk in the surety of Christ’s victory today, paying no heed to the lies and deception of the wicked one. Continue to stand in truth, in righteousness, and in love. Hold nothing back in your faith toward God and your confidence in the Holy Spirit. One day, you will rejoice over the devil in the heavens from which he will be cast out. And you can rejoice over him, even today, knowing that your life is securely hidden with Christ in God (see Colossians 3:3-4).
