In verse 1, John unfolds the profound implications of Jesus, who is the Word, eternally existing in the beginning. Jesus, the Word, was with God, and Jesus, the Word, was God. The use of the imperfect tense in the original language invites us to add always for clarity: And the Word always was with God, and the Word always was God.
Here, we encounter the incomprehensible triune nature of God. God is One Essence, yet Triune in Persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. John proclaims that Jesus, the Word, has not only existed eternally but has always been in perfect relationship with God, for the Word has always been God.
John echoes this truth once again in the introduction to his first letter:
As we continue into verse 3, John teaches us that the Word — again, who is Jesus — not only existed in the beginning but is also the source of creation itself. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (John 1:3)
Thus, Christ is not merely the Creator; as the Word, it is through the Word —through Him, as John asserts— that all things were made. John beckons us back to the creation narrative in Genesis, where God spoke and creation sprang into being. Let there be light! — God’s first command, and so light emerged! John desires for us to recognize that this creative command, spoken from the very essence of God, is embodied in Jesus Christ, the Word. Through the command of His Word, God brought all of creation into existence, and John urges us to connect that Jesus is the commandment of God —the Living Word of God.
All things were made through Jesus!
Paul the Apostle echoes this truth with equal eloquence in his letter:
Do you see the profound implications of this? God is Light, and Jesus is God; therefore, Jesus is Light, as He embodies God’s Light. This is best stated by the Scriptures in verse 4.
This is what qualifies Jesus to be the Light of the World — the Light Giver. Jesus is not merely a good teacher or prophet; He is God Himself, who has become man (see John 1:14) and thus He is Light and the Light of the World.
Beloved, do you go to Jesus for light? Do you draw near Him when the darkness that surrounds you? When there is the darkness, go to the Word — who is Jesus — the Light Giver! His light is shining in your hearts and the darkness shall not overcome it. You are safe with Christ.

The entirety of the Bible hinges on the truth of this statement like a hefty door hung upon a sturdy doorpost. The heavier the door, the stronger the post needed to support it.

Moses was the prophet and the mediator of the Old Covenant. To Moses was given the Law to preach to the nation of Israel (see Exodus 19:20-21). To Moses was given the plans of the tabernacle (see Exodus 25:40) where the LORD’s presence...
